  DABALI  AND  FOLK  PLAYS
Bhadrakali Dance

" Dabali is an evidence of the abundant cultural activities that used to happen during the Malla period in Nepal. Most of them are still Intact."

"The word Dabu is associated with the "dabu wing" in the Newari community that signifies performance or play.Dabali as a theatrical practice has been considered to be commemorated in the Lichhavi Dynasty "

Open air(dabali) theatre has a remarkable space in the theatrical history of Nepal. If we trace the etymological root of the word dabali we can locate its origin in the newari word dubali (successively dabali and dabu). The word dabu is associated with the "dabu wing" in the Newari community that signifies performance or play.Dabali as a theatrical practice has been considered to be commemorated in the Lichhavi Dynasty despite the lack of ancient artifacts of the dabali. This alternative dabali practicehas still survived; from the Lichhivi and the Malla eras down to recent times. The growth and the development of dabali reached new heights during Malla period .Cultural expert Staya Mohan Joshi says, " Dabali is an evidence of the abundant cultural activities that used to happen during the Malla period in Nepal. Most of them are still Intact."

In recent times, several kinds of dances are performed at the dabali. These reformative dances aredisplayed for several days.Kartik dance,Harisidhi dance, Swoyatkali dance, Bhadrakali dance, etc. are performed after a number of rigorous preliminary practices.Theatrical acting has occupied the core space in religious dances performed at dablis. There are ar other kinds of dances as well that are performed outsidedabalis, for instance.Lakhe dance , Mahakali dance etc.Rodi is ancient aspect of the cultural life of ancient Nepal. It has the same span of historical couse as dabali. Rodi would add the aesthetic flavour in dabalis in earlier times.

"..Theatre artist Bekha Narayan Maharjan converted the Jyapu Drama , which uesd to be staged on mats, at dabalis in Kathmandu , Bhaktapur , Lalitpur. It's believed that he staged several dramas in dabali fashion to make the medium popular among artists and common people. In 1997 BS, he created a dabali in Bhotebal.."

Dabali were developed not only under the direction and care of the former rulers but it had become the vital means of communication for the common people who made them flourish as aesthetic spaces for entertainment. It's almost evident that dabalis were one of the most important settings that hugely contributed to the development of Nepali theatre , most of them set up on the outskirt of the kathmandu valley like Dolkaha and Bhojpur. In Newar communities , People would use to perform religious dances.Theatre artist Madan Das Shrestha says, " I was deeply inspired to become a theatre artist after observing plays staged on dabalis in Dolkaha when i was young." Theatre artist bekha Narayan Maharjan converted the Jyapu Drama , which uesd to be staged on mats, at dabalis in Kathmandu , Bhaktapur , Lalitpur. It's believed that he staged several dramas in dabali fashion to make the medium popular among artists and common people. In 1997 BS, he created a dabali in Bhotebal and acted in and directed his first play, Rajkumar Bishwontar.Prof. Dr. Mohan Himanshu Thapa says, 'Bekha Narayan was popular with dabali traditions due to his lively performences in different plays. Due to his contributions towards dbali tradition, people use to call him Bekha Narayan ' Bekhacha'.In fact ,he was an admirable person who did his best to take dabali traditions to the people.

At the begining of the Rana rule in Nepal, theatre halls almost repalced dabalis .A theatre stage is required to be huge, attractive and eleborated. In contemporary lore, modern theatre is said to have taken over dabalis and theatres.Due to population boom in the capital and the outside of it, dabalis seem to have fallen under a shadow. However ,its resonance sometimes appers in the street palys, which have helped keep an ancient theatre practice alive even in modern times.
