SIGN THEATRE ____________________

showing sign drama in the street

A symbolic drama. An expression that does not need words to portray feelings and convey messages.A different realm of theatre where people who can't hear and talk use signs to tell a story .it is awe inspiring to watch them play, to witness their degree of self -confidence and to understand the subjects. This is the Sign Theatre , a younger form of theatre which is envolving in this part of the world. It has roots running deeper in the USA and UK , but it's a relatively less developed theatrical form in Asia.It was around 2057 BS that it made a formal entry in Nepal and has been gaining might with each passing day.
The Credit for this noble feat goes to Krishna Shah 'Yatri' , a young theatre activist who along with his deaf companions, staghed a play Manchhe Manchheharu at the Russian Culture Centre in 1996.It was the first sign language drama to be made public. For this purpose, he underwent a rigorous four-month sign language training and also encouraged his colleagues to do the same.

Their sincere efforts bore fruit when in 2058 BS, that very play reached the top spot in the national drama festival and Yatri bagged the title of director. It was also when the kathmandu Deaf Association formally declared the palay as Nepal's First sign language drama.

Though we have a theatre history of more than 2,500 years , sign theatre is in its nascent stage. Its slow progress is the probable outcome of the limited number of sign (around 4,000 ) which is all these deaf actors have to keep up their work with. One can imagine the complexity of portraying infinite emotions with finite signs.Yet, these actors delivers a flawless performance, unveiling personal anxiety and social barriers, showing off their might to live normal lives without being called impaired and less significant.

" Deaf theatre is the real school for aspiring artist ," says krishna Shah Yatri He adds , " It has pushed my understanding of theatre to a new level." Taking his cue several established theatre directions are taking up sign language classes to polish their acting skills.

we don't have sign theatre schools as they have in the USA , UK and in other countries , but theatre missionaries like yatri have been working hard to promote it all across the country. They have a small group of 2025 artist s leading The Jyotipunja Sign Theatre which also has deaf artist in its executive commitee. This group has staged many street theatre involving deaf artist which have received a loud applause from the theatre fraternity of Nepal.Yatri is currently working on a play which sees the presence of real deaf artists as well as artists playing deaf which will be staged in the near future.

Manchhe Manchheharu was also selected for the International Theatre Festival held in Korea in 2001 but the group couldn't make it .This group is , however , ever confident that Nepali sign theatre will get worldwide recognition if it is patronised. "Sign theatre can be a great medium to represent Nepal in the international arena. It's getting global appeal because it involves short dialouges and more physical actions ,greater intensity and substance ," concludes Yatri.
